About Pottery
Charan Sachar’s pottery reflects his passion for the fiber arts, like knitting, spinning, weaving, quilting and he uses it as an inspiration for his clay work. He strives to give life to clay, decorating to represent his love for fiber, keeping functionality and uniqueness in mind.
He uses a combination of techniques such as hand-building, extrusions, slab constructions and alterations to create his forms. Each piece is then further decorated with underglazes and slip to give it the textured feel of fabric.
His goal is to continue to work with this medium to create artwork which combines his passion for fiber arts and clay.
It all starts with a lump of clay. I use a stoneware clay which is smooth giving a very fine finish to my work. It is a very versatile clay, great to work with for throwing, handbuilding and doing slab work.
The Scott Creek extruder is clearly my most used tool in the studio for my work. Majority of my work is extruded and each piece is individually altered by hand.
All the construction and handbuilding of pieces from different parts is done by hand making each piece very unique. In the background you can see all the chemicals I use to make my own glazes and the Peter Pugger pugmill that I use to recycle my clay. Nothing goes to waste and all scraps of clay get recycled minimizing the effect on the environment. All my work is food, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe.
I use a different process to apply surfaces to make my pieces emulate the look of fabrics. Here you see me doing slip decoration that is applied freehand with patterns and designs inspired my Indian fabrics and embroidery. The process is similar to icing a cake or applying henna on the hands. This makes each piece unique and one of a kind.

These new mugs are inspired by one of my recent sock yarn spinning projects. I spun this yarn on the Majacraft Aura wheel which is part of my Artist in Residence program with the fiberygoodness. Swipe through to see pictures of my spinning and socks.
I went through a few iterations on getting a good crisp definition on the stitches and I wanted to create the random color stripes that I saw with my sock yarn. The stripes are handpainted and even though I have categorized it in 4 colorways, there are going to be variations in intensity of colors and thickness of stripes in every mug, making each one unique.

After getting into knitting, my customers were asking me for yarn bowls. Even I knew I needed some nice yarn bowls.
I thought of the round bowl but really didn't find them too stable. So came up with this new oval design based off from my casseroles.
To keep with the look of knitting, these have knitted patterns just like my coffee mugs. The buttons add another level of beauty.
With a swirl cut out in opposite sides you can use them in many ways. Knitting with yarn outside and inside held together or even knitting two socks together. (TAAT socks)
They are large enough to hold a 100gm skein of yarn (worsted/fingering)
Dimensions: 7.5" x 5.5" x 3.5"
